I love word origins.  I almost always learn something meaningful—and sometimes even life changing—when I look up a word and reflect on what it means and how it was originally used.  When I looked up the origins of the word leadership many years ago, I was amazed! 

The word lead finds its origins in the Middle English word leden meaning “to conduct, accompany; bring, take, or guide” and the Old English lǣdan meaning “to go by sea, sail, or travel.”  Part of being a leader is to be a travel guide—to lead and be on a journey with others.

Equally amazing to me is the origin of the word success.  It comes from the Latin succēdere, which means “to go.”  The late author and psychologist, Ben Sweetland, was in alignment with that when he wrote, “Success is not a destination—it is a journey.” 

Both leadership and success are journeys.
