The instrument of leadership is the self, and mastery of the art of leadership comes from mastery of the self.

The Leadership Challenge

What is the Leadership Practices Inventory?
In the early 1980's, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner began exploring the question, "What do leaders do while operating at their personal best?" Asking this question led to a wave of groundbreaking research, an international best-selling book, The Leadership Challenge (now in its sixth edition), a world-renowned workshop by the same name, and the Leadership Practices Inventory or LPI. From the research data emerged 30 leadership behaviors that were factor-analyzed into Kouzes and Posner's leadership model, The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership that has stood the test of time for over 35 years.
There is a stand alone LPI-Self in which the leader performs only a self-assessment, a student version that guides them on their path towards exemplary leadership, and the most researched and validated LPI 360.
The LPI 360
The LPI 360 assessment provides a self-assessment plus powerful, feedback from a variety of observers who are selected by the leader taking the assessment. Observers include your manager(s), direct reports, colleagues, and if helpful, other stakeholders. With the exception of your manager, all of the observer's feedback is anonymous. You and your observers rate how frequently you engage in each of the 30 leadership behaviors. A customized, detailed, and confidential assessment report is then generated.
Hundreds of scientific studies have consistently confirmed the reliability and validity of the LPI and the Five Practices leadership framework on which it is based. To date, it has been trusted by over five million leaders worldwide and it has become the gold standard for leadership development. This led the Center for Creative Leadership to call the LPI the "most reliable and valid instrument for leadership development."

Feedback is Leadership Gold
Research shows that by collecting feedback from a variety of perspectives, especially peers and direct reports, leaders can understand how they are seen from all points of view. They can then use this knowledge to assess the extent to which they actually exhibit exemplary leadership behaviors. This gives the leader an opportunity to identify strengths to leverage and identify opportunities to improve on. That's why I say that this type of feedback is a valuable gift of leadership gold.
Expert Assessment Debrief & Consultation
After your personalized and confidential report is generated, you and I sit down (usually virtually) and walk through your report in a safe and confidential setting. I'll provide you expert insight into your results. I have administered hundreds of LPI 360s and consulted and coached dozens of leaders on this powerful leadership tool. The LPI 360 doesn't measure your personality, competencies, or any type of quotient. It measures what others see you do. It measures the perception that others have of how frequently you display or engage in exemplary leadership behaviors proven to access leadership effectiveness.
The Process
This process—the assessment, the detailed report, the debrief/consultation, and if you choose, additional coaching—enables you to assess your leadership behaviors and act on your discoveries. It increases your self-awareness, improves your leadership skill and practice, and helps you see your leadership strengths and opportunities for improvement. It will enable you to understand the impact of your leadership approach on those you lead. It is a powerful process that will help you adjust and take actionable steps toward achieving the extraordinary and reaching your personal leadership best.
