What is coaching?
Different people have different ideas about what coaching is and often confuse it with other types of professional relationships.

Coaching is not consulting, training, therapy, or mentoring
CONSULTING
Consultants provide expert analysis, opinions, and recommendations to individuals, teams, and/or organizations for how to best solve a problem(s)

THERAPY
Therapists help people with a broad variety of mental health issues.  The focus is on helping eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase well-being and healing

TRAINING
An expert instructs the trainee in the knowledge and practice of performing a particular job, skill, and/or competency; typically in adherence to policy, guidelines, standards, or best-practices
MENTORING
An unequal relationship where the more experienced person imparts knowledge, skills, and experience to a less experienced person. The knowledge, power, and influence of the mentor is expected to assist the mentee in achieving career objectives; can be a more long term relationship

Coaching is relationship
A relationship with a coach is unlike any other personal or professional relationship.

There are lots of books, videos, and services out there that claim to change your life—coaching might be the one thing that actually delivers on that promise.

Coaching is all about you.  It is a highly personalized, confidential, and collaborative partnership focused on your goals and getting results.  It is a thought-provoking and creative process.

Through the coaching relationship you will gain new insights and awareness, greater clarity and focus, and encouragement.  You will be able to more thoughtfully close the gap between where you are now and where you want to be.  You will be given the safe space to discover core issues and the challenges you face, the context surrounding them, and how to set clear personal and/or professional goals.

In the coaching partnership, it’s you, not the coach, who then identifies and develops strategies to carry out an action-plan.  It's you who determines what success looks like.

We're talking about the kind of goals that inspire you to maximize your personal and professional potential.  They should be about creating the best version of you.

Coaching can also cultivate deepened learning, improved performance, enhanced quality of life, and self-actualization that facilitates human excellence and enables you to flourish.  Coaching has the potential to help make your dreams come true and change your life.

What's my role in the coaching relationship?
At the heart of coaching is open, honest, and meaningful dialogue.  With that in mind, it’s important to know that for coaching to be successful you must:
  1. Desire change;
  2. Be open and willing to be coached; and
  3. Be committed to take action, to create the time to fully participate in coaching, and to do the work required for change.

What does the coach do?
As your coach, Alan will be your personal catalyst for change, personal growth, and development.  He will empower you to find the answers within yourself.  He will listen to you in a way that you rarely get listened to.  He will observe, ask questions, offer feedback, brainstorm with you, and act as a sounding board and be your thinking partner.

Alan may also make requests of you—requests for action that will be aligned with your coaching goals.  You can accept, decline, or negotiate any request he makes.

Alan maintains the ethics and standards of behavior established by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), including the standards regarding confidentiality.  You can learn more about them on the ICF website.
